Should I Stay or Should I Grow?

There are moments in medicine when you don’t feel burned out exactly.

You just feel stuck.

Stuck in a job. Stuck in a role. Stuck in a story about who you are supposed to be. Stuck in the idea that because you worked so hard to get here, you should probably just keep going.

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Elaine Schulte, Professor of Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Vice Chair for Academic Affairs and Faculty Development at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, and a board-certified physician coach.

So, yes, our conversation is about coaching, but it is not Coaching 101.

It is about what happens when physicians get so overwhelmed that possibility starts to disappear. It is about the swim lane so many of us entered early, and what it feels like when that lane becomes the whole pool. It is about mentorship, agency, contribution, transition, and the questions that help us see a next step when we feel stuck.

Maybe the question is not simply, should I stay or should I go?

Maybe the better question is:

Am I staying because this is still a place where I can grow?

Or am I staying because I forgot growth was possible?
