Self-Compassion

by Kristin Neff

Physicians are trained to extend compassion outward.

We are often much less skilled at extending it inward.

Kristin Neff challenges the idea that being hard on ourselves is necessary for achievement, accountability, or improvement.

I think that’s especially important in medicine, where the internal response to a mistake, a difficult day, or simply not being able to do everything can be remarkably unforgiving.

Self-compassion isn’t letting ourselves off the hook.

It’s learning that cruelty toward ourselves isn’t the only way to stay responsible.
