by David Epstein
Medicine rewards specialization, expertise, and knowing more and more about less and less.
Range is a useful counterweight. Epstein explores the value of broad experience, experimentation, and allowing a career, or a life, to develop in ways that aren’t always linear.
I find that especially interesting for people who reach a point in their careers and start wondering whether the thing they trained to do has to remain the only thing they’re allowed to become.
Sometimes breadth isn’t a lack of focus. It may be where the next chapter comes from.
